Devil’s Claw

In medicine and herbal medicine, Devil's Claw is known for its anti-inflammatory properties because the plant contains active ingredients useful for soothing joint pain. The main beneficial properties of Devil's Claw reside in its roots. These properties have been known since ancient times by African tribes, who use them to treat fever, infections and even malaria. Devil's Claw is also effective in cases of neck pain, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout and to combat hypertension. It is said that Devil's Claw is so special that it can also perform an important cholesterol-lowering function. In fact, Devil's Claw can reduce the absorption of bad cholesterol by the intestine, thanks to some substances called phytosterols. Devil's Claw is also recommended for those who suffer from acne and/or pimples as it purifies the skin and protects it from external aggressions. Devil's Claw owes its common name to the characteristic appearance of its fruits, which are covered with "hooks". Devil's Claw is an odorless and bitter-tasting perennial plant that grows in climatic ranges between 17 and 30 degrees in South East Africa. The Claw grows spontaneously in Namibia, Angola, Botswana and in the Kalahari Desert. In 1900 it was introduced to Europe by GH Mehnert, a German soldier who had the merit of making its properties known in Germany.
