Propolis is a resinous substance that is extremely beneficial for our body. Its properties have been confirmed by scientific research for its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects. Defined as a natural antibiotic, it has both a bacteriostatic effect, meaning it prevents the multiplication of germs, bacteria and viruses; and a bactericidal effect, meaning it is able to kill these microorganisms. Propolis is produced by bees at the end of the pollen collection season. Foraging bees are entrusted with the task of collecting resin from leaf buds and bark of some tree species. These small and industrious insects use wax, pollen and enzymes to make this totally natural product. It seems that its name derives from the Greek words pro, "defense" and polis, "city", it is no coincidence that bees use propolis as an insulator from external agents and a disinfectant for the hive. It is used by bees to "paint" and disinfect the internal walls of the hive, in particular the queen's chamber. Its color can vary from yellow-green (when pines prevail) to reddish (poplars) to black (birches). The flavor ranges from bitter-sour to sweet.
